Pulse oximetry is a test used to measure the oxygen level (oxygen saturation) of the blood. It is an easy, painless measure of how well oxygen is being sent to parts of your body furthest from your heart, such as the arms and legs. A pulse oximeter is a non-invasive (on the outside of your body) and painless device that measures the oxygen levels in your blood. It can quickly detect even small changes in how efficiently your blood carries oxygen to the extremities of your body, such as your fingers and toes. The oximeter measures oxygen levels as a percentage (scored out of 100). We call this your oxygen saturation.
Normal arterial oxygen is approximately 75 to 100 millimeters of mercury (mm Hg). Values under 60 mm Hg usually indicate the need for supplemental oxygen. Normal pulse oximeter readings usually range from 95 to 100 percent. Values under 90 percent are considered low.
